Seminar "Microflow Metrology"
In recent years, the need for controlling and measuring very small gas and liquid flow rates in the
range of µl/min and smaller and volumes of liquids in the range of nl and smaller has become more and
more important. Among other things such measurements are used in analytic systems like chromatographs as well as in new
analytic systems based on microsystemtechnology, often called "lab-on-a-chip". In the synthesis of drugs,
such as enzymes, process control of such small flow rates is also necessary.
In general, the field of microflow metrology concerns a great variety of applications which may range from administering
medicine to patients to problems of fuel injection in engines.
Not only metrologists but also scientists and engineers involved in the research and application of microflow
techniques are faced with problems of measuring small flow rates and volumes.
The PTB seminar "Microflow Metrology" will gather together all parties concerned with this
subject, in particular manufacturers, users, researchers from industry, research institutes and universities, as well
as from national metrology institutes.
The seminar will cover topics such as
- Issues of gas and liquid microflow measurement in different fields of application
(e.g. automobile industry, medical applications, etc.)
- Generation and control of small flow rates
- Generation and control of defined microdroplets
- Theory and modelling of microflow
- Methods and services available today for providing traceability for microflow measurements
- New measurement standards for extending the range to smaller rates and volumes.
It will provide an information basis to answer questions such as:
- What is the need for metrological support in order to improve the measurement and control of microflow with
respect to enabling new applications and to developing new techniques?
- What is the need for providing traceability for microflow measurements in particular?
The seminar will be organised by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig and aims at
exchanging ideas and experience with scientists involved in this area to foresee better understanding of their
metrological needs. It will set the pattern for implementing this topic within the international metrology community.
